Skin Rejuvenation through BOTOX®
BOTOX Injections NYC
These days, it is possible to make remarkable improvements to one’s appearance with noninvasive, outpatient treatments administered by a skilled healthcare professional.
The Breakthrough of Botox
As in so many other areas of medicine where surprising new uses for known substances are discovered, Botox injections were found to have promise in a number of medical fields, including aesthetic medicine.
Eventually, Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) was FDA-approved for a number of cosmetic uses. Professionals in the field and their patients were elated to find that a treatment process taking only about 10 minutes could make a marked improvement in facial appearance, often making recipients look a full 10 years younger than their chronological age.
Patients who undergo treatments can successfully rid themselves of the following signs of aging skin:
- Wrinkles between the eyebrows, known as frown lines (glabella)
- Forehead wrinkles
- Crow’s feet, the wrinkles on the sides of the eyes
Botox works by blocking signals between the nerves and the muscles. It keeps the injected muscles from contracting, thus causing the adjacent wrinkles to relax and soften.
How long does a Botox injection last?
BOTOX injections produce dramatic effects that last from four to six months, but, as muscle action gradually returns, lines and wrinkles gradually reappear. For this reason, patients often choose to have treatments repeated at regular intervals. It is worth noting, however, that, with the ongoing use of Botox, patients’ lines and wrinkles frequently appear less noticeable with the passage of time because the muscles controlling them are being programmed to relax.
Good Candidates for BOTOX Procedures
Optimal candidates for BOTOX® injections are generally individuals between 25 and 60 years of age who, while eager to improve their appearance, begin preventative anti-aging, do not want to have surgery in order to do so. They are seeking a more youthful appearance that can be periodically maintained without having to undergo any surgical procedures.
Even so, Botox is not for everyone. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or who suffer from neurological disorders should not receive treatments.
The Procedure Itself
The Botox procedure is quite a simple one, though of course its administration requires a qualified and capable professional. Even though most patients tolerate the small amount of injection discomfort quite well, the skin will be numbed beforehand, either through a prescription cream, a blast of cold spray directed at the skin right before administration, or an injected anesthetic.
During the injections, a very thin needle is used to inject the Botox. The number of injections needed depends on several factors, including the size of the targeted area. Patients can resume normal daily activities after a brief rest, but must be careful not to rub or massage the treated area for at least 12 hours after treatment.
Side Effects of BOTOX
The most common side effect of injections is temporary bruising. A rare, but not serious, complication may be headaches, typically limited to 24 to 48 hours in duration. In a small percentage of patients, usually those who fail to rest or refrain from rubbing the treated area for 12 hours, eyelid drooping (also temporary) may occur. For most patients, receiving Botox injections is a smooth and pain-free process. The vast majority are delighted with the results.
