More Men are Receiving BOTOX® Injections

Why are more men turning to BOTOX®?
When minimally invasive cosmetic procedures first became available, they were looked upon by many as at worst dangerous and at best frivolous, but the culture has come a long way. Now, having aesthetic tune-ups is commonplace and acceptable, increasingly for men as well as for women. With the modern emphasis on health and wellness has come an increased acceptance of appearance enhancement. Rejuvenation has become the word of the day.
As Stigma Disappears, Popularity of Procedures Increases
Since cosmetic procedures, surgical as well as nonsurgical, have come within the purview of masculinity as well as femininity, more and more men are seeking medical means to self-improvement. Not only have plastic surgeries, such as rhinoplasty, breast reduction for gynemastia, and liposuction become more common among men, but BOTOX® injections have soared in popularity among the male population.
Where once men were stigmatized (or feared being stigmatized) for having aesthetic injections and so were secretive about such procedures, now the desire to improve one’s appearance is no longer viewed as effeminate. As a matter of fact, many people now view Botox and other cosmetic injections for men as positively as they view exercise and weight reduction — as means toward the increased virility that comes with working to make oneself more attractive and self-assured.
One medical provider of Botox in New England reports that the percentage of men coming in for Brotox injections has increased by 10 percent over the past few years. Apparently determined to make the procedure their own, male executives, construction workers, professionals and small business owners have nicknamed the procedure “Brotox.”
Reasons for “Brotox”
Men tend to seek Botox injections for many of the same reasons women do. Life changes resulting in new beginnings are often the catalyst. Losing a job or starting a new one, getting divorced, embarking on a new career, looking seriously for a mate — any of these may push a man in the direction of self-enhancement to increase self-confidence.
There are also serious medical reasons for receiving Botox injections, such as getting relief from intractable migraine headaches, blepharospasm (of the eyelids), and severe underarm perspiration.
The Statistics and the Benefits
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that 400,000 men received Botox injections in 2014, a 337 percent increase from the number in the year 2000. Studies have shown that men who receive Botox injections may experience added, unexpected benefits. Feeling more attractive and younger can assist in lowering blood pressure, relieving depression, and promoting weight loss through improved diet and increased exercise. Apparently, feeling better about oneself can have a snowball effect, leading to engaging in other self-improvement activities.
If you are considering Botox or other aesthetic injectables, it is important to seek out a professional who is highly trained and who focuses on this specialized area of cosmetic medicine.
