Lumecca is the most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) now used to improve the appearance of the skin. It improves the complexion by reducing skin irregularities with photothermolysis, a comfortable light treatment, Lumecca works on many types of imperfections of the skin, such as freckles, age spots, sun damage, vascular lesions (spider veins, port wine stains), and the redness of rosacea.
A Lumecca photofacial has been shown to improve the clarity of the skin in just one to three treatments, producing a more even skin tone and more youthful appearance. Lumecca is safe and effective for use on almost all areas of the body. It is most commonly used to treat regions regularly exposed to the sun, such as face, neck, decolletage, legs, hands and arms.
It is important for patients preparing for a Lumecca treatment to avoid direct sun exposure for a month prior to treatment. The procedure itself involves a bright flash of light during which the patients experiences a mild sensation of tightness. Afterwards, the skin is temporarily warm and red for about an hour. During the next 24 to 48 hours, pigmented spots may appear darker, but during the following week these pigmented lesions will flake off, and the skin tone will even out. Vascular lesions may also temporarily change coloration, but will then fade and disappear.
While improvements to the skin are visible within a few days of Lumecca treatment, the skin will continue to look younger and more glowing for up to two weeks. Pigmentation improvements are usually visible more quickly than vascular ones; both will be optimal after about 2 weeks. For many patients, having multiple photofacial sessions will improve the final result. The only side effects of Lumecca treatments are the redness and warm skin immediately following the sessions. Patients are advised to avoid sunlight immediately of treatment.
